
16"x20" On Arches Watercolor Paper
The underpainting for this work was granulating watercolor. It's a really interesting medium which creates unpredictable and varied texture. While that watercolor was intriguing, I decided to bring color into it in an additive method with soft pastel.

I then added color (in watercolor) to the monochromatic underpainting:

And then ultimately decided to add pastel over the watercolor. Adding the. color took away some of the drama perhaps of the original Lunar Black version, but that underpainting served to provide structure and hierarchy, and some of it pokes through the pastel for a textural feel.
