Common Ground Beneath Divided Skies

Blue flag iris and cardinal flowers grow together above an intricate network of roots hidden beneath the soil. Their vivid blue and red blooms appear distinct—even opposing—while below ground their roots twist, overlap, and share the same earth.

Common Ground Beneath Divided Skies considers the connections that exist beneath our most visible differences. The tangled roots suggest neurons, blood vessels, and networks of human relationships—a reminder that what appears separate on the surface may be deeply interconnected underneath.

The painting was exhibited in South Shore Arts’ 2026 My America Salon Exhibition and was subsequently selected for New/Now: Pondering Change, a National Juried Exhibition at the South Haven Center for the Arts.
